Tether Partners with Georgia to Launch National Stablecoin for the Georgian Lari

Tether has announced a collaboration with the nation of Georgia to develop a national stablecoin pegged to the Georgian Lari. The May 25 announcement marks one of the earliest efforts to place a national currency onto digital asset rails under a purpose-built stablecoin regulatory framework, Tether said.

The project aims to combine Tether’s experience as a stablecoin issuer with Georgia’s interest in modernizing payments and expanding digital financial services. By tokenizing the Georgian Lari, the initiative could enable faster, low-cost cross-border transfers, improved settlement times, and new on-ramps for residents and businesses to access digital finance.

A central feature of the collaboration is the creation of a stablecoin regulatory framework tailored to a national currency. Tether emphasized that stablecoins are evolving beyond experimental assets and that dedicated regulation can provide clarity, consumer protections, and operational guardrails. A purpose-built framework may help balance innovation with financial stability and compliance requirements as the Lari moves onto digital rails.

Putting a national currency on digital asset rails does not happen overnight. The project will likely involve technical integration, regulatory coordination, and stakeholder engagement across public and private sectors. Tether’s role as an issuer and technical partner could streamline token issuance and liquidity, while Georgian authorities would set rules governing circulation, reserve management, and oversight.

If successful, a Georgian Lari stablecoin could serve as a model for other countries exploring sovereign-linked digital tokens and national stablecoin strategies. Benefits could include improved remittances, better financial inclusion for underserved communities, and a more modern payment infrastructure aligned with global digital-asset trends.

As the collaboration progresses, investors, regulators, and citizens will watch closely to see how the stablecoin regulatory framework is implemented and how tokenization of the Lari interacts with existing monetary policy and financial safeguards. The Tether–Georgia initiative represents a notable step in the evolution of national stablecoins and the broader adoption of digital assets in sovereign finance.
