Deutsche Bank to Launch Bitcoin and Ethereum Custody Service for Institutions

Deutsche Bank, Germany’s largest bank, is preparing to launch a cryptocurrency custody service in the coming weeks. The initial offering will support major digital assets, including Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), as the bank strengthens its presence in the blockchain industry. Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank’s corporate banking division, revealed the plans during the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meetings in Bangkok.

Crypto Custody for Institutional Clients

Unlike retail-focused crypto exchanges, Deutsche Bank’s upcoming service is designed primarily for institutional investors and corporate clients. The bank will provide secure storage and management of digital assets, including cryptocurrency wallets and private keys. This removes the need for businesses to build and maintain their own custody infrastructure while offering a regulated, bank-grade alternative for digital asset exposure. It also gives institutions a familiar entry point into digital assets without exposing them to unregulated platforms.

Expansion to Asia and Stablecoin Support

Deutsche Bank will initially introduce its crypto custody services in Germany before targeting major Asian financial markets by 2027. Alongside Bitcoin and Ethereum, the bank has identified stablecoins such as USD Coin (USDC) and Euro Coin (EURC) as part of its digital asset roadmap. In a later phase, Deutsche Bank plans to offer fiat-to-stablecoin conversion, enabling institutional customers to move between traditional currencies and stablecoins seamlessly.

Blockchain-Based Financial Services

Beyond custody, Deutsche Bank is advancing blockchain innovation across multiple fronts. Tokenized bank deposits are being explored to record conventional deposits on distributed ledgers, potentially improving transparency and settlement efficiency. The bank is also working on blockchain-based bond issuance, which could simplify debt issuance, reduce administrative burden, and accelerate securities settlement.

With Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins, and broader blockchain services in its pipeline, Deutsche Bank is positioning itself as a key bridge between traditional finance and the digital asset economy. For institutional clients, this signals a growing acceptance of crypto as a legitimate and professionally managed asset class. As regulatory clarity improves, more banks are likely to follow Deutsche Bank’s lead.
