Apple this week outlined a new Advertising Services policy detailing which ads will not be allowed in Apple Maps. The update is notable: it restricts several major local ad categories and reinforces Apple’s privacy-first approach to location-based advertising.
Under the policy, Apple Maps will prohibit ads that directly or indirectly promote home services — including plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, and general contracting. Ads for bail bonds and surety bond services are also banned, as are promotions for cryptocurrency ATMs. Apple does note that ads referencing medical services may be allowed but will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
These restrictions set Apple Maps apart from competitors like Google, which accepts home services ads and treats them as a large local ad category. Apple appears to favor advertising from businesses with a physical location customers can visit, limiting the kinds of local promotions that appear in search results and Suggested Places.
Maps ads must also comply with Apple’s broader advertising rules. Prohibited content includes ads for controlled or intoxicating substances (like marijuana and tobacco), weapons or ammunition, and content that promotes violence, illegal activity, fraud, or deceptive claims. Apple additionally restricts alcohol, dietary supplement, financial product, prescription drug, gambling, religious, political, and contest-related ads under specific rules. Anti-Apple ads and ads that promote hardware competing with Apple products are disallowed as well.
Apple says Maps ads will be clearly labeled with an "Ad" tag, and that a user’s location and the ads they interact with in Apple Maps will not be associated with their Apple ID. Crucially, Apple states it will not collect ad data or share it with third parties, underscoring the company’s emphasis on privacy for Maps advertising.
Ads are scheduled to begin appearing in Apple Maps in the United States and Canada this summer, showing up in search results and in Suggested Places. For businesses and advertisers, the new guidelines mean rethinking local ad strategies if targeting Apple Maps — especially for home services and other restricted categories. For users, the policy promises a more curated ad experience with strong privacy protections.
